1987 - "At that point it seemed like all I was ever asked was to do was more blood and demons and skulls etc... nothing of real meaning. The owner of NOISE, Karl Walterbach, was into ultra violent comics... like people getting their eyes razor bladed and such... just not my thing frankly.
To be honest, I grew up reading Roberet E. Howard's Conan, and I loved the fantasy art of Frank Frazetta - who is still one of my art heroes... so up until then, the imagery of metal was suited to things I enjoyed painting. But fantasy art isn't only about blood and guts, and at this point I felt like sort of making fun of all that .
So I decided to serve up a head in a soup of blood to make him happy ha ha. It's pretty cool graphically and color wise though, and I'm not at all ashamed of it. Someone recently joked that it was Benicio Del Toro (a great actor... but probably a kid when I painted that). Actually, like all my paintings there was no reference. I like painting purely from the imagination."
